Music bands/artists to look out for...
The Skins
This infectious Brooklyn-based band is consisted with siblings Bayli, Reef, and Kaya Mckeithan along with friends and dueling guitarists, Daisy Spencer and Russell Chell. With the age range of 13-19, they play like pros when it comes to their music. They have a soulful interpretation of rock with their own flair into it and with the powerful, soothing vocals and authentic drum beats, you will feel like you are listening to Black Sabbath or Led Zeppelin. http://www.theskinsband.com/

Harlem Shake
I have never heard of the Harlem Shake that almost everyone is doing nowadays... until my school Manhattanville College suddenly did one and I saw what kind of f*$kery I was getting myself into while watching this on Facebook.
So apparently, the rules of the 'Harlem Shake' are: one person starts dancing with a mask on and then once the beat drops, everyone joins into this random dancing and does whatever they want. At first, I found them funny because of how these people came out of nowhere but a week later, I started to realize that this is another example of why people do not have any originality in them. So... I did my research on who started this mess in the first place. According to a bunch of residents in Harlem, all of these Harlem Shakes you have been seeing on Youtube are just a joke to the REAL Harlem Shake.
According to wwno.org, Jay Smooth explains:
"It's been around for decades. Most people trace it back to a street dancer named Al B, who used to entertain the crowd at the Rucker tournament, which is a legendary basketball league in Harlem," says Jay Smooth, Harlemite and host of the hip-hop video blog Ill Doctrine. "It was brought into the mainstream by one of my Harlem neighbors, Sean 'P. Diddy' Combs, who brought the dance into a couple videos he made with one of his artists, G Dep."
Of course, that faded away years ago but the 'Harlem Shake' stayed true in Harlem. However, things changed in 2013 when a meme started on Youtube, naming it the 'Harlem Shake' and once it got viral, everyone wanted to make their own Harlem Shake. Basically, some random dude disrespected the original Harlem Shake, claimed the name to be his, and made everyone look like fools. Now, if people did the Harlem Shake that everyone thinks is correct in Harlem, there is a huge possibility that there will be a violent riot.

Church member defends Pastor Worley's Anti- Gay Rant
Anderson Cooper speaks with a member of the Rev. Charles Worley's church, who defends his sermon about homosexuals. (May 23, 2012)
The fact that a pastor said that they would want to put a homosexual behind an electric fence makes me fear about America. This church member is uttering her words like she is really speaking 'the word of God'. I just wonder what goes into people's mind when they say certain things like that. Can somebody answer that question for me?

My Communication class
On a Tuesday afternoon, in the freezing blissful weather that we had last week, my professor Brian Snee discussed with us about the control of the media from the FCC (also known as the Federal Communications Commission). I was loving Professor Snee's outfit from Target by the way. I hope I get an A+ for generosity :)
Anyways, in class, we learned about who is watching the media and that most governments have a greater control on what the media advertised on everyone's televisions and radio stations.
Then, he discussed about how the old school has transformed drastically to the new school of media. Back then, professionals used to produce the content and the audience consumed and analyze. Now, it is vice versa where we, as the audience, produce the content while the professionals consume and analyze the content.
Then, we started to questioned who owns the media from back then to the present day. Before in the 1980's , 50 companies owned most companies. Today, however, it has decreased to five companies (Time Warner, News Corp, Viacom, Comcast, and the most shocking one... Disney).
Now, I don't mind the fact that there is the control on the media due to certain audience members and the graphic images and vulgar language can lead to questioning for parents to understand whether or not it is legal to show your children those kinds of shows. Personally, censorship tends to hinder them from learning the values of right and wrong with the consideration of which most children are not taught about the responsibilities of adult themes until they are in high school.
What is scary enough is that these five companies are controlling every single thing that is put into these television stations. What is worse is that these companies can be decreased to one company who can censor everything that is being put on television.
One company can control the media just like that. Then, what if there are no more companies to even specialized on the media. What if the FCC takes over and makes everyone not be able to see anything at all?
Just think about it.
FCC is already the primary source to media oversight and regulation. When will we ever find the answers to this kind of problem?
This is why I support cultural jamming so that media corporations do not take over on what we watch any longer. It is the power to speak up on what is right. It is what we value in life to stand up for what we believe in.
Now back to Brian Snee's outfit, it is surely unique I suppose. I can't wait for this semester to learn more on communications. I hope you enjoy this.
